When the Beat Was Born: DJ Kool Herc and the Creation of Hip Hop by Laban Carrick Hill
A biography of DJ Kool Herc, discussing his childhood in Jamaica and New York, and his career as a hip hop DJ.
***Good I liked this book because I enjoy reading biographies and autobiographies. I like how Clive (DJ Kool Herc) followed his dream from when he was a kid. I would recommend this book to kids up to 4th grade.
***okay One of the things that I like about this book is that the pages were full of color. One thing that i wonder is that did the mom and dad want there son to be a DJ because it isn't a proper job. I think that the lesson of the story is that you can be what ever you want as long as you put your mind to it.
***Good! This is a great story about how DJ Kool Herc became a DJ. His music helped people to stop fighting. How did he get his name? What kind of music did he invent?
***Great! I enjoyed the book "When the Beat Was Born" because it was very amazing. One thing I found interesting was how DJ Kool Herc didn't give up. I would recommend this book to a friend because it's awesome!
***Great! I really liked how this book was about a DJ. Maybe in the future i'll be thinking of music as my future. Even though he was teased and kids called him hercules, he didn't let that get to him. Hope you like the book!

***Okay I personally didn't like the book because I wasn't really interested in the in DJs but the book itself I like. DJ Kool Herc din't give in and got to his dream his own way and was a leader not a follower. I would recommend this book to people who like music and DJs.
*****Great because I like that he always wanted to become a DJ but when he moves to new york he becomes a famous DJ and have big parties and 6ft tall i loved it.
great book in the begining clive liked the music he liked how his stomache went boom and he liked how his feet went hip hop hipity hop then he always go,s to the sunset avenue to look at the partie things but he couldnt go because he was only 13 when he was 6 feet tall he started to play basketball and they called him herculies. he always go with his mamma to the parties. he alwayed liked to dance and sing rap . he wanted to be a dj when his dad bought the big speaker it didnt work then when cilvie worked on it then he heard a big sound . so when he went to the parties he always fixed the speakers at the parties when on broke it would always have another on that will play the same song
***okay I loved that in this book he was inspired by a famous DJ and even though he moved to New York it didnt stop him and soon he started a little party so he could DJ as much as he wanted to!
*****great I liked this book because he got to kinda fulfill his dream of being a DJ. i think cool Herc was a cool name. He was also being nice by like giving out shout-outs. I also liked how the street gangs all got together and were break dancing at the party.
***great i really like this book because DJ was playing basketball when he was 6 feet tall and then he was listening to the music when his dad bought the speaker it was broken but he fixed it and it buzzed so loud

*****I love the book it was so cool that DJ loved rap that is my favorite songs.I felt bad that he could not go to house partys when he was 10 years old.when he was thirteen he moved in with his mom he alwas went to house partys and he loved to play basketball all the time.One day his dad bought big radio speakers and they did not work.He spent a while working on fixing it.And he finally fixed it when he tried it out it worked it was very loud that i think the hole block can hear it.When he was a adult he started being a Dj at partys I loved it it was the best book ever

***Good I like how Clive did something he loved and followed ( his ) hero. It was cool that he dedicated himself to fixing the radio speakers. He still did what he loved and eventually, he became a DJ at parties. I would recommend this great book.
P.S. If you like/love DJs, hip hop, or rapping, then this is the book for you.
***** I really like this book because I like the way Clive made his dream come true from his ideal. And even though he had to move he made the beat out of his new neighbor in the Bronx in New York. I loved the way gange members weren't fighting but came to gether to breakdance. I like the way the he took his music to lots of different people all over the city. I recommend this book to everyone because it teaches a good life lesson.

**ok I like this book becues it showes that you can do enything .like kool herc did he started with a littel specker and made it biger ,or like how he was tiney but he tried and tried and got biger. i recamend this book to every one becuse we can all things
*I dont realy like the book but... In the begining it told him how he loved DJs and how music makes his feet go hip hop. But in the end it was all just not synchronised and it was all over the place. I like how time lines help me out but this one didn't help.

***Great I liked this book because it showed how a passion for something can turn into a career. Clive had always loved music. His neighbor in Jamaica had been a DJ and he'd always have parties. When Clive moved to Bronx, New York, his love for music didn't change. He'd become Kool Herc and DJ Kool Herc-when he threw his own parties. I recommend this book to everyone.
